Computer Volunteer Service RNIB would love to hear from computer buffs willing to help people with serious sight problems who use computers at home. Computer Volunteers offer help to people with serious sight problems who are using computer equipment at home for personal use. Our volunteers have already helped over a thousand computer enthusiasts to overcome techincal problems. Volunteers do not provide training, but offer assistance with computer problems ranging from setting up entire systems, to card installations and memory management. The number of general computer queries is growing rapidly and we are hearing from more and more people wanting modems installed so they can get onto the Internet. Initially, volunteers are not necessarily experts with the special technology blind people may be using - such as speech synthesizers or screen magnification - but are proficient with most aspects of PC operation: fitting expansion cards, installing modems, hardware upgrades, installing software and general trouble shooting. We periodically run training sessions for new volunteers around the country. Sometimes a volunteer can solve a problem over the telephone, but usually you will need to visit the computer user's home. Sometimes all that is needed is a pair of eyes to spot the problem. For more information please
